Right When You Need It.

Locksmith emergencies are unique because almost every job a locksmith encounters is different. Even something as straightforward as fitting a new lock can vary from one property to another, despite using many of the same basic tools and materials. Repairs can be just as varied. Over time, faults can develop in different ways depending on how a homeowner or tenant uses their doors and locks. Most problems tend to occur in three key areas: the front door, back door and windows.

Addressing these issues effectively often comes down to a locksmith’s experience, knowledge and ability to adapt. While basic locksmithing knowledge can certainly be gained through training, practical experience is what helps a locksmith understand how to deal with the unexpected. Training can teach a novice how locks, doors and security systems work and what can potentially go wrong. In reality, however, everyday use, wear and sometimes misuse can cause locks and other components to fail in ways that are not always easy to predict.

I once encountered a particularly unusual example. A homeowner had tried to save money by fitting a new lock themselves rather than calling a professional locksmith. Unfortunately, the lock had been installed incorrectly and was not properly aligned with the door frame. Initially, everything appeared to work, but over time the misalignment put increasing pressure on the internal mechanism. Eventually, the lock began sticking and the homeowner found themselves unable to secure the door properly.

The lock was relatively new and still under warranty, so the owner contacted the manufacturer. However, the engineers could not identify the underlying cause of the problem. The lock was replaced several times, but the same issue kept returning because nobody had identified the underlying problem with the door and frame.

It was only by chance, when I was called out to replace the lock, that we discovered the real cause of the problem. The door had dropped slightly over time, meaning the lock and the strike plate were no longer correctly aligned. This is a good example of why it is important to be cautious about unqualified work, incorrect installations and repairs that may have been carried out without fully understanding the wider door and security system.

My advice to you as a consumer is simple: ask questions. If you are unsure about an answer, don’t be afraid to ask for clarification. Make sure you understand what work is being carried out, which locks or security products are being used and why they are necessary. Most importantly, make sure you are comfortable that you are receiving a fair price and that the workmanship is of a good standard.

A good locksmith should be happy to explain the problem and the proposed solution clearly and straightforwardly. After all, good communication, experience and quality workmanship are just as important as fixing the immediate security problem.
